A wonderfully engaging and romantic comedy about Evie Crump and the residents of 18 Kemp Street...When struggling actress Evie Crump inherits a sprawling Victorian pile from an old family friend in Camden, it would seem to be a dream ticket for Evie and best-friend Bing to escape from the leaky-flat-from-hell. Except it comes with a proviso: she may not evict the existing tenants under any circumstances. There's Bernard, a recluse, who doesn't know how to boil an egg; unforthcoming single-mum Caroline; and the mysterious A P Warne of whom there is no sight. And try as she might to focus on reviving her acting career and her love life (without falling for the charms of her leading man), Evie simply can't resist getting involved in the lives of her new family...

My thoughts
Ugly and Beyond Ugly follows the story of Constance, who suffered abuse at the hands of someone who was supposed to give unconditional love - her mother.

It's heartbreaking, this story. At the same time, I found myself completely in awe of her determination to succeed in life, despite the many lemons life handed her. Read and be captivated by Constance.. who against all odds, have made herself a lady to be reckoned with.

She later filed a lawsuit against her mom and won. Read all about it here... http://women.timesonline.co.uk/tol/life_and_style/women/article5275784.ece
Synopsis
'I would like some cosmetic surgery.'
'For what reason?'

'Because I'm ugly, ugly, ugly.'

It was Constance's mother who told her she was ugly. Over and over again. And that was just one strand of a childhood blighted by physical and emotional abuse. But the young girl had a strength and resilience beyond her years.

She put herself through university, financing her studies with several jobs-including one caring for the terminally ill in a hospice – and then fulfilled a lifelong ambition by joining a prestigious set of legal chambers. But Constance's troubles were not over...

An apology

For all bibliophiles

First of all, thank you very much for your constant support through these months. Sharing my love for books with you all and receiving your mails has been a great experience. As for friends made along the way, thank you for your friendship.

Of late, I've been mostly missing in action (MIA), responding only to emails. A thousand sorry(ies) to those who've received their books late.

The past month or so has been a really busy one. Trips to the post office has therefore been sparse and sporadic. Things are looking up though. And your books are already zooming their way to you.

To make up for my tardiness, all returning buyers (bibliophiles) will be entitled to a RM3 discount.

Synopsis
Eight years ago, when Hannah was a struggling single mum, Nick Steadman seemed like Mr Right and Prince Charming rolled into one. Kind, strong, reliable - and the perfect step-dad to Lottie - what did it matter if his taste in trousers was more M&S than D&G?

OK, so their relationship's never been based on passion, but it has plenty of respect, friendship and trust. Trouble is, after eight years together they're beginning to realise that friendship isn't enough. The solution? An amicable divorce. Which would be just fine if it wasn't so hard to explain to nine-year-old Lottie.

And if Hannah didn't find herself a teeny bit annoyed at Nick's ability to move on so quickly. Not that she isn't happy for him and his new lover. Of course she is. After all, they agreed they'd be mature, grown-up and rational about their separation. They may be divorced but they can still be friends. Can't they?

Min-Jin Lee
Selling at RM28

Retails at RM42.90

Synopsis
In her noteworthy debut, Lee filters through a lively postfeminist perspective a tale of first-generation immigrants stuck between stodgy parents and the hip new world.

Lee's heroine, 22-year-old Casey Han, graduates magna cum laude in economics from Princeton with a taste for expensive clothes and an "enviable golf handicap," but hasn't found a "real" job yet, so her father kicks her out of his house. She heads to her white boyfriend's apartment only to find him in bed with two sorority girls.

Next stop: running up her credit card at the Carlyle Hotel in New York City. Casey's luck turns after a chance encounter with Ella Shim, an old acquaintance. Ella gives Casey a place to stay, while Ella's fiancé gets Casey a "low pay, high abuse" job at his investment firm and Ella's cousin Unu becomes Casey's new romance.

Lee creates a large canvas, following Casey as she shifts between jobs, careers, friends, mentors and lovers; Ella and Ted as they hit a blazingly rocky patch; and Casey's mother, Leah, as she belatedly discovers her own talents and desires.

Though a first-novel timidity sometimes weakens the narrative, Lee's take on contemporary intergenerational cultural friction is wide-ranging, sympathetic and well worth reading. Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

The glamorous (double) life of Isabel Bookbinder
Selling at RM28
SOLD
Condition NEW

Synopsis
Isabel Bookbinder is a twenty-seven-year-old assistant at the Saturday Mercury newspaper in London. She has a disinterested boyfriend, a mother who loves clothes that match, and a father who always expects her to do better.

Although Isabel may spend most of her time measuring newspaper column inches, she's well on her way to becoming a bestselling author. She's already perfected Her Look (cashmere track suit, lots of mascara), is working on her toned size eight figure, and gets up at dawn to work on her novel (well, sort of). She even has a fabulous mentor -- a bestselling but increasingly eccentric author who takes her to glamorous book parties and introduces her to the dreamy literary agent Joe Madison. But when she inadvertently exposes a political sex scandal and her name becomes known for all the wrong reasons, her glamorous double life starts to spin out of control.

With her distinctive voice, penchant for getting in sticky situations, and blind confidence in her dream of becoming a famous novelist, Isabel Bookbinder is a heroine that you can't help but root for.

Synopsis
"I was born twice: first, as a baby girl, on a remarkably smogless Detroit day in January of 1960; and then again, as a teenage boy, in an emergency room near Petoskey, Michigan, in August of 1974."

So begins the breathtaking story of Calliope Stephanides and three generations of the Greek-American Stephanides family, who travel from a tiny village overlooking Mount Olympus in Asia Minor to Prohibition-era Detroit, witnessing its glory days as the Motor City, and the race riots of 1967, before they move out to the tree-lined streets of suburban Grosse Point, Michigan.

To understand why Calliope is not like other girls, she has to uncover a guilty family secret and the astonishing genetic history that turns her into Cal, one of the most audacious and wondrous narrators in contemporary fiction. Lyrical and thrilling, MIDDLESEX is an thrilling reinvention of the American epic.

Run away and hide...

On the Run
Greg and Gina Hill

SOLD
Condition Used - *AS NEW*

My thoughts
A very well-written and intriguing autobiography following the lives of Gregg and Gina Hill, children of the infamous mafia turncoat, Henry Hill. This book tells the tale from their viewpoint... of how they were swept into the witness protection programme and how each time their irresponsible father slips up, they have to start moving - just in case, the mob catches up with them and kills them. Gregg and Gina alternates telling their story. It's interesting to see how they recount and dealt with things differently.

Synopsis
By the son and daughter of Henry Hill - immortalised in the book Wiseguy and the Martin Scorsese film Goodfellas - On The Run is the harrowing account of a childhood spent coping with an explosive father whilst dodging Mafia payback. Henry Hill's business partner, Jimmy Burke has whacked every person who could possibly implicate him in the infamous Lufthansa robbery at JFK airport. On his way to prison, lifelong ganster Henry is given two options: sleep with the fishes, or enter the FBI's Witness Protection Program. Gregg and Gina are dragged along for the ride. Like nomads, they're forced to wander from state to state, constantly inventing new names and finding new friends, only to abandon them at a moment's notice. Living under constant fear of being found and killed. But Henry, the rock Gregg and Gina so desperately need, is a heavy cocaine user and knows only the criminal life. He is soon up to his old tricks and consistently putting their identities in jeopardy. And so it continues until the kids, now almost grown, can no longer ignore that the Mob might be less of a threat to them than remaining under the roof of their increasingly unbalanced father.

The bane of existence

Derik's Bane
Mary Janice Davidson
Selling at RM20
SOLD
Condition Used - *AS NEW*

My thoughts
She has done it again! Great sense of humour, witty dialogue, fearless heroine and hunky hero. Best loved for her Betsey series, MJD delves into her latest paranormal (AGAIN) romance.... this time with a powerful sorceress and an uber good-looking werewolf! I just love LOVE love MJD and wished that more of her books can be bought in Malaysia!

Synopsis
Davidson's comedic werewolf-meets-sorceress romance will elicit delighted howls of laughter. Derik, a werewolf with a supergorgeous body to match his superpowered strength, wakes up alpha one morning; then, after the seer of the Wyndham werewolves has a vision of the end of the world, he is sent off to California to "take care" of Morgan Le Fay before she brings on the apocalypse. But Dr. Sara Gunn has no idea that she is an incarnation of the evil sorceress. And besides, she researched the legend of the enchantress in college and knows that her vilification was caused by patriarchal distortions of the historical record. When Derik discovers that he is unable to kill her as instructed, they set off to stop a cult that may destroy the world while trying to instigate King Arthur's return. Davidson's use of coarse language is perfect for Derik's canid personality. He, wolfishly enough, really does only have two major concerns in life: sex and food. This riotous romp is the first full-length novel in Davidson's Wyndham Werewolves series.

Undead and Unwed
Mary Janice Davidson

Selling at RM20
SOLD
Condition Used - good condition

My thoughts
Prepare yourself to be totally taken in by Betsey, the shoe-loving average girl who suddenly finds herself dead and made-over to become Betsey, Queen of Vampires. Get ready to be entertained as she comes to terms with the fact that she is now dead (or rather 'undead') and also made Queen. This is first in Mary Janice Davidson's Betsey series.

For those of you who don't know MJD, she is by far, one of my favourite authors - quick-witted, sharp-tongued and very very entertaining. I secretly think Betsey is emulated after her. :)

Synopsis
Betsy Taylor--former model, newly unemployed secretary, 30, and still single--wakes up after being flattened by a small SUV in a tacky coffin wearing cheap knock-off shoes. Her mother is glad she is back, albeit as a vampire, but her stepmother is enraged that Betsy has reclaimed her designer-shoe collection. With a wealthy best friend and a newly acquired doctor pal who is not susceptible to her formidable allure, she sets out to right wrongs but is abducted by Nostro, a tacky 500-year-old vampire who rules the undead roost. It seems that Betsy is an anomaly: a vampire who doesn't burn in sunlight, can fight the urge to feed, and is not repulsed by religious articles, all of which may make her the prophesied Queen of the Vampires. Teaming up with gorgeous vampire Eric Sinclair, who is in her opinion a major pervert, she takes on Nostro and his minions. Sexy, steamy, and laugh-out-loud funny, Davidson's chick-lit foray into the paranormal is delightful.

My thoughts
In the engaging way of Marian, the story comes alive almost immediately for readers to relate to her three characters. Humorous and with razor-sharp witticism, it's a book which will keep you glued to your seat, and hungering for more of Keyes' gems.

My thoughts
This is solely for the lovers of historical fiction... Chevalier, author of the Girl with the Pearl Earring, weaves her magic yet again.

Synopsis
Burning Bright
follows the Kellaway family as they leave behind tragedy in rural Dorset and come to late 18th-century London. As they move in next door to the radical painter/poet William Blake, and take up work for a near-by circus impresario, the youngest family member gets to know a girl his age. Embodying opposite characteristics – Maggie Butterfield is a dark-haired, streetwise extrovert, Jem Kellaway a quiet blond introvert – the children form a strong bond while getting to know their unusual neighbor and his wife.

Set against the backdrop of a city nervous of the revolution gone sour across the Channel in France, Burning Bright explores the states of innocence and experience just as Blake takes on similar themes in his best-known poems, Songs of Innocence and of Experience.

My thoughts
The enjoyment of chocolates and lollipop... need I say more?

Synopsis for Chocolat
Try me... Test Me... Taste Me...

When an exotic stranger, Vianne Rocher, arrives in the French village of Lansquenet and opens a chocolate boutique directly opposite the church, Father Reynaud identifies her as a serious danger to his flock - especially as it is the beginning of Lent, the traditional season of self-denial. War is declared as the priest denounces the newcomer's wares as the ultimate sin.

Suddenly Vianne's shop-cum-cafe means that there is somewhere for secrets to be whispered, grievances to be aired, dreams to be tested. But Vianne's plan for Easter Chocolate Festival divide the whole community in a conflict that escalates into a 'Church not Chocolate' battle. As mouths water in anticipation, can the solemnity of the Church compare with the pagan passion of a chocolate éclair?

For the first time here is a novel which chocolate enjoys its true importance, emerging as a moral issue, as an agent of transformation - as well as pleasure bordering an obsession. Rich, clever and mischievous, this is a triumphant read.

Synopsis

Imagine a young boy who has never had a loving home. His only possesions are the old, torn clothes he carries in a paper bag. The only world he knows is one of isolation and fear. Although others had rescued this boy from his abusive alcoholic mother, his real hurt is just beginning -- he has no place to call home.

This is Dave Pelzer's long-awaited sequel to A Child Called "It". In The Lost Boy, he answers questions and reveals new adventures through the compelling story of his life as an adolescent. Now considered an F-Child (Foster Child), Dave is moved in and out of five different homes. A page-turner. Get ready to get so absorbed in the story, that you'd rather forfeit go without food and sleep, than put it down. That happened to me! :)

Synopsis

From the author of Number One bestseller 'Damaged' comes the poignant and shocking memoir of Cathy's recent relationship with Tayo, a young boy she fosters whose good behaviour and polite manners hide a terrible past.

Tayo arrives at Cathy's with only the clothes he stands up in. He has been brought to her by the police, but he is calm, polite, and very well spoken, and not at all like the children she normally fosters. The social worker gives Cathy the forms which should contain Tayo's history, but apart from his name and age, it is blank. Tayo has no past. Tayo is an 'invisible' child, kidnapped from his loving father in Nigeria and brought illegally to the UK by his drink and drugs dependent prostitute mother, where he is put to work in a sweat shop in Central London. When he sustains an injury and is no longer earning, he is cast out. When Cathy takes Tayo to school he points out a dozen different addresses where he has stayed in the last six months, often being left alone. Tayo lies, and manipulates situations to his own advantage and Cathy has to be continually on guard.Tayo's social worker searches all computer databases but there is no record of Tayo -- he has only attended school for 3 terms and has never seen a doctor. He and his mother have been evading the authorities by living 'underground'. With his mother recently released from prison, Tayo is desperate to live with his father in Nigeria, but no one can track him down or even prove that he exists.

For a night in, chick-lit is my guilty pleasure. Laugh, cry, sympathise, empathise ... there's just something about the light, hysterical and often stupid things the heroine does that keeps me so entertained. I guess I'm just a girl!

Synopsis
Eve Gardiner is a rather cool urban single mum who lives in a small North London flat with her four kids, Denny (22), Tom (20), Anna (9) and Robbie (2). She gardens and does yoga every day to keep herself sane, while holding down a stressful job as a probation officer. She is pretty content and her life is filled with her children, friends, work and occasional casual sex. Then suddenly Tom announces that his 20-year-old girlfriend Deepa is pregnant and that they want to get married, (her family deeply disapprove of the match). And things start to get really complicated when Tom decides to track down his father Dennis (who walked out of their lives when his business collapsed leaving them penniless) and invite him to the wedding. And if that's not enough to put the cat among the pigeons, Eve's alarmingly attrative, much-younger ex-boyfriend Joseph (and father of Anna and Robbie) appears on the scene again and they both begin to wonder whether they did the right thing when they split up...

I must admit. I'm not one for romance novels. I outgrew that when I turned 20. I remember reading Roberts and loving her books though. This is not her usual style... she has forayed into the supernatural realm. And it's actually quite interesting :)

Synopsis
In the small village of Hawkins Hollow, three best friends who share the same birthday sneak off into the woods for a sleepover the evening before turning 10. But a night of pre-pubescent celebration turns into a night of horror as their blood brother oath unleashes a three-hundred year curse. Twenty-one years later, Cal Hawkins and his friends have seen their town plagued by a week of unexplainable evil events two more times - every seven years. With the clock winding down on the third set of seven years, someone else has taken an interest in the town's folklore. Quinn is a well known scholar of local legends, and despite Cal's protests, insists on delving in the mystery. But when the first signs of evil appear months early, it's not only the town Cal tries to protect, but also his heart.

My thoughts

I don't belong here, I'm only visiting - Papillon's reply to whoever asking him why he has always been trying to escape prison. An intriguing read.

Synopsis

Henri Charrière, called Papillon, for the butterfly tattoo on his chest, was convicted in Paris in 1931 for a murder he did not commit. When he was sentenced to life imprisonment in the penal colony of French Guiana, one thought obsessed him: escape. After planning and executing a series of treacherous yet failed attempts over many years, Papillon was eventually sent to the notorious prison, Devil's Island, a place from which no one had ever escaped -- that was, until Papillon. His escape, described in breathless detail, was one of the most incredible tests of human cunning, will, and endurance.

Shhh...

Author autographed copy
Condition: Pre-loved (MINT condition)

My thoughts
I absolutely love..love..love Mary Janice Davidson. Similarly, this is a must read for all her fans. This book contains three short stories (interwoven) - sweet strangers, lovely lies and delightful deception.

In sweet strangers...
Renee Jardin never meant to become the world's most sought-after thief. But the minute she walks out of her biotech firm accidentally carrying "The Cure" -- the most important scientific discovery of the century -- she's on the run from ruthless bioengineers, cops, and the U.S. government.

In lovely lies...
Peter Random lost everything when he was outwitted by that goody-goody Renee Jardin. Late in his rent, his job gone, Peter vows he'll never let anyone get close enough to burn him again. So why can't he seem to tell Lori Jamieson and her troubles to hit the road?

In delightful deception...
At the biotech firm, they call her Thea "I.Q." Foster -- "I.Q." for either Intelligence Quotient or Ice Queen, depending. Slipping the Cure into Renee's tote bag was satisfying revenge, but now that the fun's over, Thea sets her sights on a new challenge: sarcastic, secretive Jimmy Scrye.

My thoughts
Sit back, relax and enjoy the gastronomical delight which makes up this book. Smell the cakes baking and join in the laughter. This is one book which is filled with passion, love. loyalty and secrets. Hey, they are girls, after all.

Synopsis

Rachel, Alex, Billy and Jemima: four women whose lives are changed for ever by the Haven, a home for unmarried mothers. Theirs are tales of sadness and heartbreaking loss, but also of discovery: of intense and magical friendships, chocolate sponges, unexpected kisses and the secret world of the Memory Lane cafe. When Erica, a young woman just out of prison, begins to stir up the past, she discovers that the Haven's story is far from over.

Let's face it, as teenagers, we all receive guilty reading pleasures from books bearing the titles - 'Love Stories' or 'Sweet Valley' in our shelves. I'm one of them too. Obviously, I've outgrown them now and have moved on to more intellectual (I hope) reading pleasures.

So, I've decided to let them go at RM8 each. Or you can choose to buy it in a bundle. The price is inclusive of postage. They may be just a little older than the rest of my books, but they are still in really good condition. They are also wrapped nicely in clear plastic and have no dog eared pages.

So relive your childhood, anyone? Or maybe bless your niece, daughter, younger sister with these reads at a cheaper price? :)
